Established in 1948 by William McCoombs, Pier 76 Marina is Westbrook’s first marina. It is located at 54 Old Boston Post Road in Westbrook. It was formerly the Boston Post Road until the steel bridge was erected and RT 1 was officially named. Originally the marina was one dock on the Pachaug River with small boat rentals. The “fleet” consisted of skiffs constructed by the Brockway brothers in Old Saybrook by the Connecticut River. Known as a Brockway Dory, the 14’ rowboats usually had a 4.5 horsepower motor and were almost guaranteed to be able to catch fish!

Today, Pier 76 Marina has 14 docks, mainly in the protected dug-out basin, with finger docks up to 20’ long. Powerboats range in size from Jet Skis up to 26’ in length. Fresh running water is available on each dock to rinse your boat off at the end of your cruising or fishing day. A fish cleaning station is also on hand for all the successful anglers!

Speaking of fish, Pier 76 Marina was the home port of when he caught the World Record 82 lbs Striped Bass. On August Greg Myerson went out to Southwest Reef, which is south of nearby Duck Island and the Clinton Breakwater. Using a jig of his own making he boated the record-breaking fish and went on to appear on the hit TV show Shark Tank with his lures.

Other popular fishing holes include Menunketesuck Island for blackfish, Long Sand Shoal for flatfish and flounder or The Race for Bluefish. Depending on the year, you can catch blue crabs right from the dock. You might even want to buy a fresh lobster from some of the boaters who catch them a mile off shore around Duck Island.

Fishing is not the only reason to dock your boat at Pier 76 Marina. Cruising is popular with many destinations from which to choose. One mile off shore is the Duck Island anchorage with two breakwaters to give you a calm place in the sun. To the west is Clinton where many boaters choose to tie up at the Aqua Restaurant. To the east is the Connecticut River with all the hangouts from Old Saybrook to East Haddam. Southeast is the Orient Point and Greenport on Long Island. Take your pick!

Pier 76 Marina has Bill’ Seafood Restaurant for a neighbor but other eating establishments are close by including Frankie’s, Dairy Queen, Lenny & Joe’s Fish Tail, The Log Cabin, Denny’s, …

On foggy days you may want to go shopping at either the Westbrook Outlet Mall or Clinton Crossings. If you have points on your Time Share you can even check into Water’s Edge Resort for a swim. Military history buffs will enjoy a quick trip downtown to check out the collection of uniforms and wartime memorabilia at the Military History Museum.

Be safe and have fun!
